My education

To become a Bereiter FN or equine specialist riders must enter a certification program with a selected educator. The program consists of in-practice, hands-on education with an approved equine Master (Pferdewirtschaftsmeister) alongside a rigorous academic program. Variations on the equine specialty degree include grooming and management, blacksmithery, specialty training (gaited horses), driving, and classical training of horse and rider.

“Bereiter FN” refers to a qualified and certified equestrian professional in Germany, specifically one recognized by the German Equestrian Federation (FN). This certification signifies a high level of expertise in horse training, riding instruction, and stable management.

Throughout the program students partake in educational classes such as business management, anatomy, nutrition, biomechanics, veterinary practices, genetics, client care, with a focus on the chosen major. Alongside classes students are working in the chosen facility daily, sometimes up to 20 hours a day.

At the end of the program students undergo an examination process in front of a board of certified committee members at FN headquarters in Warendorf, Germany. The exams occur over a two-week period where students are assigned multiple horses and required to care for them, maintain the stable, feed, analyze conformation and current state of condition, and present a hypothetical training plan for each assigned horse. Over the course of this two-week period the students will ride assigned horses daily, and receive last minute coaching and guidance on the testing process from an approved specialist.

The final examination includes a written theory exam, where students are assigned multiple questions at random from a series of coursework given throughout the years. The questions can be pertaining to anything in the equine field and usually include questions regarding health, veterinary care, management, and an emergency scenario.

If the written exam is not sufficient this is an automatic fail. For ridden exams students must perform an L level dressage test (2nd level); L level jumping course (1’30); teach lessons to fellow students in both disciplines; and ride up to two randomly drawn horses without stirrups (we are never allowed a mounting block).

Students are evaluated on grooming, lunging, nutrition plan, coaching, and verbal analysis of each phase. After every step of the process students must present to the selected panel and analyze all rides, lessons, mistakes, etc. They must state what was felt, learned, and experienced with each individual horse and be able to vocalize errors, use proper vocabulary, and present in a professional fashion. They must develop a training program for each assigned horse and be able to accurately describe and assess any given scenario along the way.

Throughout the apprenticeship program students must also keep daily, weekly, and monthly records of all experiences, horses ridden, competitions completed, etc. Students are required to compete in a minimum of 3 dressage and 3 jumping competitions to complete the degree. After completion of exams with sufficient scoring students hold the “Bereiter FN” title and receive a degree as an Equine specialist in classical riding, classical training of horse and rider.

Testimonials

“Sadie has been working with my two horses and I since 2023 Her skill, energy, expansive experience and knowledge, training and bodywork has been absolutely tranformative.

She has furthered my riding skills and continually shows me techniques to help the horses continue their progress between sessions, I now understand and recognize some changes in their bodies as well as their minds as training progresses I had a good relationship with my horses before we met but now it has blossomed into something so much greater. The trust and connection is amazing. Sadie is very instinctive at knowing what each horse needs on a particular day in order to progress in a healthy and productive way. She has the knowledge and training to then continue their education as far as you want as long as it’s good for that horse.

I love knowing that for her, the horse comes first.”
